Obituary

One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever. Ecclesiastes 1:4 George C. "Chocolate" Hugie was born on May 23,1913 to the late Caesar and Lila Manigault Hugie, on Maxwell Plantation in Georgetown, SC. He was the 11th child of 13 children. As a child he would also call Annadale Plantation, Daisybank Plantation, Rice Hope Plantation and Oakhill Plantation in Georgetown SC, his home. He lived on all these plantation as a free man. He attended public school in Georgetown County. He continued learning by taking adult education classes. George was a member of the Trident Literacy Association. He was part owner of the North Area Funeral Home, since 1959 and has operated Hugie's Limousine Service since 1965. He served in the United States Navy. George worked 40 years for Wesvaco in North Charleston, South Carolina and retired in 1978. At an early age, George accepted Christ as his Personal Savior. He joined St. Peter's A.M.E. Church, where he has been a faithful member and great supporter for over 70 years. During this time he was a member of the Prayer Band, a member of the Steward Board and Leader of class #6. He was united in Holy Matrimony to Ruby McBride on September 22, 1943; however his loving wife preceded him in death. He leaves to mourn: two sons Bishop George H. (Elizabeth) Hugie of Mount Pleasant, SC, and Arthur V. Nesbit of North Charleston, SC, four daughters: Emma Jean Joy of North Charleston ,SC, LaTricia H. (Sam) Halls of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, Cynthia A. Mitchell of North Charleston, SC, and Blanche H. (Perry) of North Charleston, SC, One brother-in-law John (Lenora) McBride of Baltimore, Maryland ; 22 Grand children, 59 Great-Grand children, 13 Great- Great Grand children (4 of whom preceded him in death). A host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
